How is the Camp organised?
|
The District Secretary (organiser from the area) is responsible for the allocation of the number of children, as well as the eight 'hut teachers' (four men and four women) from the district schools.
All queries prior to camp should be directed to the District Secretary. |
What does the camp program involve?
|
Somers Camp aims to give children a variety of challenging experiences. Emphasis is placed on personal and social development through being a member of the cooperative community of a school camp. Children are given the opportunity to develop confidence in themselves and in their ability to adjust and cope with a 'new' environment. Activities include archery, art, boating, ropes courses, drama, environmental studies, flying fox, rock climbing and 'challenge by choice' swing. |
What
is my role as a Visiting Teacher?

The primary role of the Visiting Teacher is the pastoral care of the children in their huts and working groups. Visiting Teachers will assist Permanent Teaching Staff with the conduct of lessons. Delivery of the program is primarily the responsibility of the Somers Camp Teaching Staff with the assistance of the Visiting Teachers. |
What are my duties at camp?

The duties of the Hut Teacher falls into three categories 1. Pastoral Care ensuring that the children are helped to settle quickly into the camp routine giving them the greatest possibility of enjoying the camp. 2. Teaching Activities undertaken by the hut teacher include lessons taken on his/her own and lessons where the teacher assists camp staff. 3. Area Supervision, which is similar to yard duty, and mail distribution. You will be rostered on at various times during the camp

What facilities are there for the Visiting Teachers?
|
Each teacher has their own lockable room within the dormitory that they share with their group of 20 children. There is also a lounge room with a TV and tea, coffee and snack making facilities. A public phone is available with an "inward call" facility for you to receive calls from as well as to call out. This phone number is 03 5983 5401. Two teachers' bathrooms are also available for your use.

Do I get any time off? |
Teachers have some time off while at camp. There are surf skis, canoes and bicycles available for recreational activities around camp. The Mornington Peninsula has many attractions such as wineries and golf courses to enjoy. All teachers must travel to and from camp with the children.

Can I have visitors while I'm at camp? |
You are welcome to have visitors while you are at camp however it is helpful if you arrange to have them visit when you are not required for duties. |
What do I need to bring to camp? |
It is recommended that you bring clothing suited to outdoor activities and a variety of weather conditions along with towels and toiletries as required. Dress is casual at all times. The camp provides pillows and blankets. You may prefer to bring a sleeping bag. |
